Understanding Rack Tolerances

Although many squat racks are advertised as 3"x 3" 3or 2"x 3", no two racks are manufactured exactly the same. Small differences in steel production, welding, and powder coating are normal throughout the fitness equipment industry.

Why does this matter?

The Versa Hook and Versa Hook Pro are precision-manufactured to fit industry-standard racks. Because rack manufacturers each have their own production tolerances, the fit may vary slightly from one brand—or even one rack—to another.

Factors that affect fit include:

  • Powder coat thickness – The finish applied to the rack can add measurable thickness to each side of the upright.

  • Steel tubing tolerances – Steel tubing is manufactured within an allowable dimensional range rather than to one exact size.

  • Weld distortion – Heat from welding can create small dimensional changes in the finished upright.

  • Corner radius – Some manufacturers use sharper or more rounded corners, which can affect how accessories seat against the rack.

  • Manufacturing variations – Even two racks from the same manufacturer may have slight dimensional differences between production runs.

What should I expect?

A proper Versa Hook fit may feel:

  • ✔ Snug with little to no movement

  • ✔ Slightly tight during the first few installations, but loosens up with use

  • ✔ Have a very small amount of side-to-side or front to back movement before the locking pin is installed

These conditions are considered normal and do not affect the intended function of the Versa Hooks.

If the fit feels tight

  1. Confirm the Versa Hook is installed in the correct orientation. The Versa Hook and Versa Hook Pro can be installed on either the inside or the outside of the rack.

  2. Inspect the rack for excessive powder coating buildup or debris.

  3. Try installing it on another upright, as dimensions can vary slightly between racks.

  4. Apply firm, even pressure while aligning the locking pin.

  5. After several uses, the powder coat on the contact surfaces may naturally burnish, allowing for smoother installation.

Note: Do not strike the Versa Hook with a hammer or modify the product to force installation.

If the fit feels loose

A small amount of clearance is intentionally allowed to accommodate normal rack manufacturing tolerances. Once the barbell is positioned on the J-Hooks and the Versa Hook placed over it and secured to the rack with the locking pin installed, the system becomes substantially more stable during normal accessory exercises.

Typical Industry Tolerances

Advertised Upright Size: 3"x 3" (7.62 cm × 7.62 cm) or 2"x 3" (5.08 cm x 7.62 cm)

Actual Finished Size May Vary: Approximately 2.93"–3.01" (7.45–7.65 cm) or 1.93"x 3.01" (4.91 cm x 7.65 cm) depending on the manufacturer, production batch, and powder coating.
